Bethany & Rufus

Bethany Yarrow and Rufus Cappadocia are a cello & voice duo from Brooklyn, New York who move together through a sonic universe of transcendent invocations rooted in the spiritual musics of the Americas. Deeply influenced by ceremonial music from around the world their performances are like watching two spirits weave a river of song, prayer, and dance — of improvised melodies, ancestral incantations and ecstatic groove. Bethany & Rufus are also deeply committed to social justice and earth activism, performing often in the streets at demonstrations, rallies, and concerts for change all over the world.

Rufus, a world renowned cellist, is highly acclaimed for his cross cultural collaborations, taking the cello into previously unexplored realms. He has collaborated with a wide spectrum of world music artists. Through his work with West African, Haitian Vodou and Arabic Music his unique musical style traces the lineage of American music back to its root sources. Rufus is also well known for his improvisation based solo cello repertoire and critically acclaimed CD “Songs for Cello” (Daqui Records).

Rufus met Bethany in 1999 at a gig at the legendary Knitting Factory in downtown Manhattan and they quickly formed a deep musical partnership. As the daughter of folk legend Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary) Bethany absorbed a huge amount of traditional American folk music, blues and spirituals in her early childhood which permanently rooted her in the voices of her ancestors. Throughout her life she has continued to learn and study traditional songs and prayer music from all over the world. Bethany’s tour-de-force stage presence, mesmerizing voice and deep knowledge of the material help her, like a musical medium, to transmit the truth, beauty and prophetic messages of these songs.

For this performance Bethany & Rufus are honored to be joined by Moroccan percussionist and oud player Brahim Fribgane, a master musician who has performed with many great artists at festivals throughout the world including: Dr. L. Subramaniam, Leni Stern, Vishal Vaid, Club d’Elf, Sami Yusuf, Hassan Hakmoun, Will Calhoun, Adam Rudolph, Zakir Hussein, Giovanni Hidalgo, Malika Zarra, Hamid Drake, Selva Ganesh, Steve Gorn, Larry Coryell, Reggie Workman, Hubert Laws, Corey Segal, Adam Deitch, Pete Seeger, Amit Chattergee, Medeski Martin & Wood, to name a few. Brahim has recorded with Harry Belafonte, Paula Cole, Club d’Elf, Jamsheid Sharifi, Leni Stern, DJ Logic, Malika Zarra, Morphine, among other talented artists.

Jurassic 5
Though there’s actually six of them, Jurassic 5 got everything else right on their self-titled debut EP. Part of the new rap underground of the late ’90s (along with Company Flow, Mos Def, Dr. Octagon, and Sir Menelik), the sextet — rappers Marc 7even, Chali 2na, Zaakir, and Akil, plus producers Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark — came together in 1993 at the Los Angeles café/venue named the Good Life.

The six members were part of two different crews, Rebels of Rhythm and Unity Committee; after collaborating on a track, they combined into Jurassic 5 and debuted in 1995 with the “Unified Rebellion” single for TVT Records.
This collective will bring a diverse array of hip-hop genius to the ARISE Music Festival lineup.

At the tail end of 1997, their EP appeared and was hailed by critics as one of the freshest debuts of the year (if not the decade). By 2006, Cut Chemist had left the group to pursue his production and DJ ambitions; the remaining quintet enlisted producers including Salaam Remi, Scott Storch, and Exile (as well as in-house talent DJ Nu-Mark) to record Jurassic 5‘s third full LP, Feedback, released in July 2006. Less than a year later, however, the group called it quits, citing “musical differences.” They reunited in spring 2013, playing Coachella and later announcing a full summer tour.

“But when gangsta rap was at its peak, stereotypical tropes becoming uncomfortably commonplace in west-coast lyricism, one act dared to stand out with a refreshingly different attitude. The group – Chali 2na, Cut Chemist, Akil, Mark 7even, Zaakir and DJ Nu-Mark (yes, there’s six of them) – developed one of the scene’s most varied and enjoyable live shows following their 1993 founding, earning a fine reputation from both on-stage and in-the-studio activity.”

Wildlight
Wildlight is the space between the notes, the earth’s undulating pulse, the modern echoes of ancient rhythms. It is a sound that will spark your body into motion and swing your soul into flight. An unlikely pairing of a folk songwriter and an electronic music composer has yielded a new sound; music that gracefully traverses human emotions, but can also jumpstart a party into a syncopated bounce.

While vocalist Ayla Nereo delicately crafts songs that climb and tumble through a landscape of crescendos and harmonies, seasoned composer David Sugalski (aka The Polish Ambassador) keeps the beats and bass rooted deep in the subatomic layers of the earth.

The Expanders
The five-piece band comprised of John Asher (Drums, Vocals), John Butcher (Guitar, Vocals), Roy Fishell (Organs), Chiquis Lozoya (Bass, Vocals), and Devin Morrison (Guitar, Vocals) have been making reggae fans and critics take note with their refreshing sound that references the “golden era” of reggae. Morrison and Butcher grew up listening to the record collection of famed reggae archivist Roger Steffens, and credit much of their love and knowledge to the accessibility and education of those experiences. Becoming friends with Steffens’ son, they developed an obsession with exploring the deepest reaches of the genre. The Expanders’ new album Hustling Culture was released June 16, 2015, on indie tastemaker label Easy Star Records. Hustling Culture is the band’s third studio album, but for the band members feels like their first proper album as a cohesive unit. Asher explains, “Our first album was a collection of music from good friends making a record together. Our second album was a great covers album, but Hustling Culture is the band coming into its own with our songwriting and musicianship.” Morrison adds, “For this album we spent more time prepping and rehearsing, giving us more confidence in the recording studio. The result made the process more fun and enjoyable as we approached the song-writing in a more organized way and explored a wider range of topics than on the first album. Our combined efforts really shine through and all the musicians really stepped up and gave an inspired effort on the whole record.” In addition to the core members, their extended family includes keyboardist Roger Rivas of The Aggrolites and Rivas Recordings. Rivas has been an integral part of The Expanders’ recordings and helped maintain and produce the authentic sounds, which shine through on all the band’s releases. Hustling Culture was recorded entirely on analogue tape at Killion Sound in North Hollywood, CA, from 2012-2014. The studio is a favorite recording place for the band because it’s run by Sergio Rios (Orgone), a friend who understands their unique aesthetic and has the gear to capture it, giving the album a warm and colorful palette. The album title, Hustling Culture, comes from the album’s opening line: “One dollar gone but the next soon come, we never stop from hustling culture.” Morrison explains, “Everyone has a hustle, and ours is roots & culture music. It’s a way of reminding ourselves that outside of just entertaining and financial gain, there is a bigger picture and larger purpose for writing about the topics and playing the style of roots reggae that we do.” The Expanders’ music is a reminder that reggae music wasn’t born in a tropical beach paradise, but in the impoverished and underprivileged areas of Jamaica, resulting in a passionate expression for human rights, social justice and freedom from oppression. There is a subtle, yet powerful conscious thread woven throughout Hustling Culture. “Uptown Set,” for example, is about the hidden effects of our country’s party lifestyle, which brings suffering and misery to innocent poor people caught along the routes where party drugs come across the border. “Thanks For Life” is a dedication to women, the struggle they face every day, and the debt of life that we all owe to them. “Top Shelf” is a tribute to the ganja farmers and the reflection of the changing cultural views on marijuana. The band is part of a burgeoning Los Angeles reggae scene that sprang in large part from The Blue Beat Lounge (the longest running weekly ska night that happened at the Knitting Factory) and LA’s longtime premier weekly reggae night Dub Club held at the Echoplex. A song that was inspired by a key member of that scene is “Reggae Pops,” an infectious instrumental tune laid over a “steppers riddim” featuring John Butcher on lead guitar and Dan Hastie from Orgone on clavinet. The title was chosen as a tribute to the late-great Reggae Pops (born Nemencio Jose Andujar) who was a pillar of the Southern California reggae community for decades. Morrison states, “It’s impossible to accurately describe what he meant to reggae music in Los Angeles, but those who remember him from shows will never forget him. He was a dancer, a fan, and a presence that was always felt. He was the man!” The Expanders are on tour now supporting the release. Morrison concludes, “Our goal is to bring that vintage reggae feel and sound that we love to places where people might not get to hear it on a regular basis.”

The Travelin' McCourys
The Travelin’ McCourys do not stand still. They are on the road—and online—entertaining audiences with live shows that include some of the best musicians and singers from all genres. It’s always different, always exciting, and always great music. No other band today has the same credentials for playing traditional and progressive music. As the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo continue their father’s work—a lifelong dedication to the power of bluegrass music to bring joy into people’s lives. And with fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Alan Bartram, the ensemble is loved and respected by the bluegrass faithful. But the band is now combining their sound with others to make something fresh and rejuvenating. They recently played with the Allman Brothers at Wanee Fest and then brought the house down at Warren Haynes’ Annual Christmas Jam, an invitation only Southern Rock homecoming. Their jam with the Lee Boys was hailed by many as the highlight of the evening, and once word of the live video hit the streets, sent new fans online to watch a supercharged combination of sacred steel, R&B, and bluegrass. They’ve also performed with Warren Haynes, Phish, and have a tour scheduled with the aforementioned Lee Boys. Ronnie McCoury described it as “peanut butter and jelly.” It was just right. They can push forward so far because their roots are so deep. The band has a confidence that only comes with having paid their dues with twenty years on the bluegrass road. Other groups and new fans hear this immediately—the tight rhythm, the soulful material, and the confidence in taking bluegrass from the safety of the shore into uncharted waters. Ronnie says, “We like to go in and play traditional bluegrass music the way we do it with Dad, but we also like to be able to step into situations where we can really stretch out. If we need to plug in, we’ll plug in. We’re open to anything.” It’s that attitude, backed up by talent, that marks great musicians, traditional or progressive. The Travelin’ McCourys are twenty-first century musical pilgrims and adventurers. They’re onto something new, just like Bill Monroe was in the 1940s, but now we can see and hear that adventure live or online. Go see them, or—if you hold still long enough—they’ll come to you.

Del The Funky Homosapien
Born in Oakland, California, he is the cousin of seminal west coast rapper Ice Cube, and began his career writing lyrics for Ice Cube’s group, Da Lench Mob. In 1991, with the help of Ice Cube, Del released his first solo album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, at the age of 18. The album was a commercial success largely due to the popularity of the hit single, “Mistadobalina”. Ultimately Del, who was not pleased with the limited musical range of the album, severed his production-artist relationship with Ice Cube for his next album, No Need for Alarm.

No Need for Alarm saw the introduction of the Oakland clique Hieroglyphics, whose original members included Souls of Mischief (Opio, A-Plus, Phesto and Tajai), Casual, Pep Love, Del, and producer Domino. No Need for Alarm helped to expose both the regional Oakland sound of hip hop, as well as the freestyle based, “golden era 90’s” style of hip hop being expanded at the time.

Del would not produce another album for five years. About a month before the release of his third album, Future Development, Del received a letter from his label, Elektra, stating that his contract had been terminated.

Future Development became available in 1998. The album was only available on the Hieroglyphics website in tape form, but was re-released in 2002 under the Hieroglyphics Imperium label. Del also released another collaborative work with the Hieroglyphics crew in 1998, which was also the Hieroglyphics crew’s first album:3rd Eye Vision.

Two years later, Del released his fourth solo album, Both Sides of the Brain, as well as Deltron 3030 which was a collaborative work with artists Dan the Automator and Kid Koala. With Nakamura and Koala, Del was also a guest performer for Gorillaz’ 2001 eponymous album Gorillaz. He appeared on the singles “Clint Eastwood” and “Rock the House” (see Collaborations). 2003 saw the release of Full Circle, the second full-length album from the Hieroglyphics crew.

In 2004 Elektra released The Best of Del tha Funkee Homosapien: The Elektra Years without the approval of Del. The CD only includes songs from his first two albums, along with a handful of b-sides from that era. Del was not pleased and advised people to not buy the CD, saying it was just Elektra trying to make money off him due to his newfound fame.

Together with his crew, Del established his own independent record label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings, which primarily consists of an expanded Hieroglyphics roster and a few other artists with whom the group collaborates regularly.

On March 11, 2008 Del released Eleventh Hour through Definitive Jux. On March 31, 2009 Del’s next album Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) was made available for free download on the internet. The album is available at his page on Bandcamp, though he gave away some hard copies on his supporting Funk Man tour. A new video for the first single, “Get It Right Now”, is on YouTube. In September of the same year, he released a new album, Automatik Statik, for an unfixed rate with a minimum of $3.

Del released his next album It Ain’t Illegal Yet on August 6, 2010. There is no fixed price for the album, allowing listeners to pay whatever they wish for the album. Paying certain prices for the album will give certain incentives, including opportunities for personal collaborations with Del.
Del released the album Golden Era on April 19, 2011 in a three-disc set including Funk Man (The Stimulus Package) and Automatik Statik.

Del teamed back up with super producer Dan the Automator and World renowned DJ Kid Koala for a second Deltron 3030 record entitled “Event 2” which debuted in September 2013 and featured Damon Albarn, Black Rob, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zach Dela Rocha Jamie Cullum, Casual, Lonely Island, and more.

Del shared a free LP entitled Iller Than Most on January 2, 2014. He uploaded the record to SoundCloud under the username Zartan Drednaught COBRA. He described the project as “lyrically ill but fun to listen to, nothing super heavy.” Del handled the production on the project as well.

The New Mastersounds
For their landmark tenth studio album, The New Mastersounds trace the New Orleans side of their funky family tree back to their roots. Made for Pleasure, due out October 2, 2015 from revered independent label, Royal Potato Family, was recorded at The Living Room, a converted wood-frame church directly across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans. The British foursome’s latest collection of infectious grooves is steeped in those storied waters and the rich musical history they’ve carried. For the occasion, The New Mastersounds – guitarist Eddie Roberts, drummer Simon Allen, bassist Pete Shand, and keyboardist Joe Tatton – invited several guests to join them in the studio. Longtime compatriot Mike Dillon recorded with the band for the first time, while former American Idol semi-finalist and Native American activist Charly Lowry leant her powerfully soulful vocals to three tracks. Tenor saxophonist Joe Cohen and trumpeter Mike Olmos, both members of Roberts’ Stateside band, the West Coast Sounds, also joined the sessions. A late addition was Denver-based reggae singer Spellbinder, who added his distinctive vocals to an unexpected cover of Iggy Azalea’s hit “Fancy.” The title Made for Pleasure – which is taken from the organ-driven, Meters-influenced opening track – captures both the band’s guiding mantra and the raucously seedy underbelly of the Big Easy. “That’s very much the ethos of the band,” Roberts explains. “We make music for our own pleasure and for other people’s pleasure. It’s about sharing energy with an audience, whether it be live or listening at home.” That energy was in flux when the band reunited in the studio for a week last January. Roberts, usually the Mastersounds’ chief songwriter and musical director, found himself suffering an unusual bout of writer’s block. Far from resulting in a less-inspired album, however, the affliction led to the rest of the band contributing ideas and developing them live in the studio, leading to their most collaborative effort to date.

Papadosio
Mesmerizing, spellbinding and genre-defying, Papadosio reveals a striking cinematic cornucopia of sounds: orchestral, electronic, organic, acoustic, psychedelic and celestial.

Originally from the creative collegiate hotbed of Athens, Ohio, Papadosio is now centered in Asheville, North Carolina. Hitting virtually all major and secondary U.S. music locales and select festivals across North America, Papadosio tours on a massive scale but maintains a close intimacy with their fans. They are currently expanding their collective stylistic palette. “We like to have a lot of colors,” they explain. “We’re starting to push that envelope in the way we want to go – to give the people who are at the shows more of a variety of emotions. We don’t have filters. We record what’s happening.”

Their fourth full-length studio release, Extras In A Movie, balances Papadosio’s celestial sonic ambience with an organic edge and multiple guitars, both electric and acoustic. “A lot more guitar in general,” they say. “ That’s something new with this record.” What also distinguishes the new music is the prominence of their vocals. Extras In A Movie opens with a dense, harmonic introduction titled “The Last Leaf” and across the span of songs emerges subliminal echoes of prog-rock forefathers like Jethro Tull, Yes and Genesis.
