Traditionally the word ATHA conveys a blessing at the beginning of a worthy undertaking, it also means “now, this moment” and speaks to the importance of moment-to-moment awareness in yoga as a fundamental teaching. Atha reminds us that all yogic wisdom emerges from and leads us back to the ever present moment. It was strategically placed as the very first word in the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali for this reason (atha yogaanushasanam 1.1). The word VINYASA literally means “to place in a special way”. Vinyasa implies that there is intention behind every breath, movement and pause we are engaged in. In this class we will move and breathe with purpose through a skillfully created, well rounded sequence steeped in mindfulness. Through observation and a practice imbued with sensuality and feeling, our inner light of awareness begins to reveal itself and we come to know Life not as separate from us and as our ultimate teacher!
